Supporting a Major Offshore Oil Field Expansion with Multi-Stage Restriction Orifice Technology

Multi-stage restriction orifice assemblies prepared for an offshore oil field expansion

Oil & Gas

Project overview

McMenon supplied engineered multi-stage restriction orifice solutions for a major offshore oil field expansion project in Qatar. The development is designed to significantly increase production capacity, helping boost oil output by approximately 100,000 barrels per day while supporting the long-term operation of one of the region's largest offshore assets.

01 / The challenge

The Challenge

The project required reliable pressure reduction within liquid process systems while protecting equipment from the damaging effects of cavitation.

Large pressure drops across conventional flow restrictions can create areas of low pressure where vapour bubbles form. As these bubbles collapse further downstream, they can cause cavitation, leading to erosion, excessive vibration, noise and premature equipment failure.

The challenge was to provide a pressure reduction solution that could safely manage these demanding operating conditions while maintaining reliable long-term performance.

02 / McMenon's solution

McMenon's Solution

McMenon supplied multi-stage restriction orifice assemblies specifically engineered to control pressure reduction in stages rather than through a single restriction.

Each restriction orifice plate was individually sized to ensure the cavitation index remained within the plate's incipient cavitation limit. By distributing the pressure drop across multiple stages, the design minimises the formation of vapour bubbles and significantly reduces the risk of cavitation damage.

This engineered approach delivers stable process performance while helping protect downstream equipment from wear and extending operational life.
