McMenon manufactures a comprehensive range of temperature sensors required for the Oil & Gas industry, including multipoint, surface-mounted and boiler tube temperature assemblies.
Most temperature measurement requirements within the Oil & Gas industry can be met through McMenon’s standardised product range. Where an application requires something beyond the standard offering, McMenon can also provide a bespoke engineered solution tailored to the specific requirements.

TAI temperature sensor assemblies
Engineered with the Oil & Gas industry in mind, the TAI series combines a robust connection head, spring-loaded mineral insulated sensor and best-in-class head-mounted transmitters in one modular assembly.
Connection head and lid
The connection head and lid form the protective housing for the sensor element and are available in either epoxy-coated aluminium (AGL series) or uncoated 316 stainless steel (AGS series). Both head and lid options comply with IP66 and IP67 ingress protection standards. A range of lids are available: a low lid for use with or without a transmitter; a high blind lid for use with a transmitter without a display; and a high lid with a window for use with a transmitter with a display.
Extension pieces
Extension pieces are available to position the connection head clear of the process pipeline. The sensor is mounted inside the connection head and passes through the extension piece.
Sensors
All TAI sensors are manufactured from stainless steel-sheathed, mineral-insulated (magnesium oxide) cable. A variety of sensing elements are available in either simplex (single) or duplex (double) configurations. The standard offering comprises either a 3-wire PT100 sensor or a 2-wire Type K thermocouple. Type K thermocouples are supplied with an Inconel 600 sheath.
Measuring sensor specifications
All McMenon TAI sensors for the Oil & Gas industry are manufactured using either Class A PT100 sensors or Class 1 thermocouple cable, in accordance with IEC 60751 or IEC 60584. Verification of sensor element accuracy can be obtained by requesting either a 3-point calibration at 0, 50 and 100 °C or a custom calibration.
Transmitters — TTH200 & TTH300
McMenon strongly recommends converting the weak primary signals from temperature sensors to robust process communication protocols as close to the sensing element as possible. The TTH200 mid-range transmitter offers 4–20 mA and HART, delivering industry-leading performance for a single-channel HART communication transmitter. The flagship TTH300 offers exceptional performance with a dual-channel input and supports HART and 4–20 mA, Profibus PA, or Foundation Fieldbus communication protocols.
Sophisticated fault detection warns plant operators that the sensing element has either failed or is about to fail
Drift detection — both sensors are continuously monitored and any drift between them detected to give early warning of sensor failure
Automatic redundancy — failure of the primary sensor results in the automatic switching to the secondary sensor
Both transmitters can be supplied with a certificate of conformity for use in safety-relevant applications up to and including SIL level 2, with an optional LCD display module
Surface Mount Sensors
There are times when it is of questionable value to penetrate the pipeline for a temperature measurement. A surface mounting sensor can be provided to measure the temperature of the outside of the pipeline. With reasonable lagging the accuracy of these sensors is virtually identical to a Thermowell system.
Multipoint Sensors
For process vessels where a single entry port is required for multiple temperature measurements. A variety of design styles are available for what tends to be a engineered to requirements product.
Safe, tough and reliable thermowells for every industry. The TTW series of thermowells can be added as a configurable option to the TAI assemblies to provide a complete sensor system.
Manufactured with full material control — 3.1 certification, traceability to producing mill, X-Ray PMI available
Documented to Oil & Gas industry standards — material certification, welding certification, wake frequency calculations
Applications — Oil & Gas downstream, Oil & Gas upstream, arduous applications requiring high specifications
Flanged
Flanged thermowells are available in three manufacturing options: welded with a fillet and groove weld, welded with a full penetration weld, or manufactured from a single piece, shaped forging — ensuring correct granular alignment of all the thermowell components, absolutely vital in ensuring resistance to corrosion cracking.
Weld-in and threaded
Manufactured from a single piece of high quality material, there is no welding in any of McMenon’s weld-in or threaded designs.
Profiles
Three basic profiles are available: straight, where the stem diameter is consistent from the root to the tip; tapered, where the profile tapers from the root to the tip; and stepped, where the lower portion of the thermowell steps to a smaller diameter.
Velocity collars
There are times when thermowell design fails to satisfy ASME PTC19.3 2010 TW criteria. Under these circumstances, it is advisable to shorten the thermowell and change the diameters of the stem root and tip. Where the thermowell would become too short, a velocity collar can be used.
Installation
The TAI is designed to be fitted to an existing thermowell or is supplied with a solid drilled thermowell. The TAI is equipped with 10 mm of spring-loaded adjustment that ensures that the sensor tip is pushed firmly into the end of the thermowell — good mechanical contact with the thermowell improves the sensor's speed of response to process temperature changes.
